A simple method for the synthesis of 3-arylbenzophosphole oxides under Suzuki-Miyaura coupling conditions has been presented. It employs benzophosphol-3-yl triflate starting materials which, prior to our work, had not been used for the synthesis of 3-arylbenzophosphole oxides. The reactions proceed over 24 h and provide a library of 3-arylbenzophosphole oxides. The synthetic access to the benzophosphol-3-yl triflates has been improved. The preliminary photophysical properties of some 3-arylbenzophosphole oxides have been investigated by absorption and emission measurements. The theoretical calculations were performed to establish structure-property relationships.

The intracellular microsporidian parasite Nosema ceranae is known to compromise bee health by induction of energetic stress and downregulation of the immune system. Porphyrins are candidate therapeutic agents for controlling Nosema infection without adverse effects on honeybees. In the present work, the impact of two protoporphyrin IX derivatives, i.e. PP[Asp]2 and PP[Lys]2, on Apis mellifera humoral immune response has been investigated in laboratory conditions in non-infected and N. ceranae-infected honeybees. Fluorescence spectroscopy analysis of hemolymph showed for the first time that porphyrin molecules penetrate into the hemocoel of honeybees. Phenoloxidase (PO) activity and the expression of genes encoding antimicrobial peptides (AMPs: abaecin, defensin, and hymenoptaecin) were assessed. Porphyrins significantly increased the phenoloxidase activity in healthy honeybees but did not increase the expression of AMP genes. Compared with the control bees, the hemolymph of non-infected bees treated with porphyrins had an 11.3- and 6.1-fold higher level of PO activity after the 24- and 48-h porphyrin administration, respectively. Notably, there was a significant inverse correlation between the PO activity and the AMP gene expression level (r = - 0.61696, p = 0.0143). The PO activity profile in the infected bees was completely opposite to that in the healthy bees (r = - 0.5118, p = 0.000), which was related to the changing load of N. ceranae spores in the porphyrin treated-bees. On day 12 post-infection, the spore loads in the infected porphyrin-fed individuals significantly decreased by 74%, compared with the control bees. Our findings show involvement of the honeybee immune system in the porphyrin-based control of Nosema infection. This allows the infected bees to improve their lifespan considerably by choosing an optimal PO activity/AMP expression variant to cope with the varying level of N. ceranae infection.

Solvothermal reactions of lanthanide (III) salts with 1,2-phenylenediacetic acid in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent lead to the formation of the metal complexes of the general formula Ln2(1,2-pda)3(DMF)2, where Ln(III) = Pr(1), Sm(2), Eu(3), Tb(4), Dy(5), and Er(6), 1,2-pda = [C6H4(CH2COO)2]2-. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods, thermal analysis methods (TG-DSC and TG-FTIR), infrared and luminescence spectroscopy. They exhibit structural similarity in the two groups (Pr, Sm, and Eu; Tb, Dy, and Er), which was reflected in their thermal behaviours and spectroscopic properties. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that Sm(2) and Eu(3) complexes form 2D coordination polymers with four crystallographically independent metal centers. Every second lanthanide ion is additionally coordinated by two DMF molecules. The 1,2-phenylenediacetate linker shows different denticity being: penta- and hexadentate while carboxylate groups exhibit bidentate-bridging, bidentate-chelating, and three-dentate bridging-chelating modes. The infrared spectra reflect divergence between these two groups of complexes. The complexes of lighter lanthanides contain in the structure coordinated DMF molecules, while in the structures of heavier complexes, DMF molecules appear in the inner and outer coordination sphere. Both carboxylate groups are deprotonated and engaged in the coordination of metal centers but in different ways in such groups of complexes. In the groups, the thermal decomposition of the isostructural complexes occurs similarly. Pyrolysis of complexes takes place with the formation of such gaseous products as DMF, carbon oxides, ortho-xylene, ethers, water, carboxylic acids, and esters. The complexes of Eu and Tb exhibit characteristic luminescence in the VIS region, while the erbium complex emits NIR wavelength.

To determine the binding interactions and ability to form the non-covalent systems, the association process between 5,10,15,20-tetrakis[4-(trimethylammonio)phenyl]-21H,23H-porphine tetra-p-tosylate (H2TTMePP) and a series of five structurally diverse thio-caffeine analogues has been studied in ethanol and ethanol-water solutions, analyzing its absorption and steady-state fluorescence spectra. The porphyrin fluorescence lifetimes in the systems studied were established as well. During the titration with thio-caffeine compounds the slight bathochromic effect and considerable hypochromicity of the porphyrin Soret band maximum can be noted. The fluorescence quenching effect observed for interactions in H2TTMePP - thio-caffeine derivative systems, as well as the order of binding and fluorescence quenching constants (of 105-103mol-1) suggest the existence of the mechanism of static quenching due to the formation of non-covalent and non-fluorescent stacking complexes. In all the systems studied the phenomenon of the fractional accessibility of the fluorophore for the quencher was observed as well. Additionally, the specific binding interactions, due to the changes in reaction environment polarity, can be observed. It was found that thio-caffeine compounds can quench the porphyrin fluorescence according to the structure of thio-substituent in caffeine molecule. The obtained results can be potentially useful from scientific, therapeutic or environmental points of view.

Polymeric luminophors with reduced toxicity are of the priorities in the production of lighting devices, sensors, detectors, bioassays or diagnostic systems. The aim of this study was to develop a method of immobilization of the new luminophor on a surface of nanoparticles and investigation of the structure of the grafted layer. Monomer 2,7-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxypropoxy)naphthalene (2,7-NAF.DM) with luminophoric properties was immobilized on silica and carbon nanotubes in two ways: mechanical mixing with previously obtained polymer and by in situ oligomerization with chemisorption after carrier's modification with vinyl groups. The attached polymeric (or oligomeric) surface layer was studied using thermal and spectral techniques. Obtained results confirm the chemisorption of luminophor on the nanotubes and silica nanoparticles at the elaborated synthesis techniques. The microstructure of 2,7-NAF.DM molecules after chemisorption was found to be not changed. The elaborated modification approach allows one to obtain nanoparticles uniformly covered with polymeric luminophor.
